Learn how to use drop spindles to spin woollen threads from Scottish sheep fleeces, that can then be used in weaving, knitting, crochet and more.
Humans have been spinning threads for tool and garment making for 20,000 years, making it one of the oldest and most valued crafts. Spinning was not only a method of cloth production, but a way to bring together community and weave magic into garments.
All of us come from a rich lineage of spinners and weavers, so join textile-artist Alexandra Juliette for a workshop of re-remembering the art of wool spinning. We will use drop spindles to spin woollen threads from Scottish sheep fleeces, that can then be used in weaving, knitting, crochet and more.
There will also be demonstrations of wool processing with hand carders and combs. All tools and materials will be provided and drop spindles can be purchased at additional cost to take home with you.
About the Facilitator
Alexandra Juliette is a textile artist, horticulturist and wild-crafter who lives and works in Scotland. Her work focuses on the relationship between humans and the natural world — finding ways to bridge the gap that has appeared and remind us how woven we are into the fabric of nature. Growing up on a farm in the Scottish Borders greatly informs her work of celebrating rural life and stories, with an emphasis on fading traditional skills.
